What it is
Warts are non-cancerous skin growths caused by infection with certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can occur on many areas of the body and may have a rough, flat or raised appearance depending on their type and location.
Warts are contagious and the virus can spread to nearby skin or to another person through contact. Some warts disappear naturally, while others may remain for months or years.
02
What type of wart could it be?
Warts can look different depending on where they develop. Identifying the type and location helps guide the most appropriate treatment approach.
Smaller, smoother and flatter growths that may occur in larger numbers, including on areas that are frequently shaved.
Warts that develop on the soles of the feet and may become uncomfortable because of pressure while standing or walking.
Warts may occasionally return following treatment, so further management can sometimes be required.
The virus can spread to nearby skin, leading to more than one wart developing in the same or nearby areas.
Some warts remain for months or years instead of disappearing on their own.
Warts may develop around fingernails or toenails and can sometimes be more difficult to treat.
WHO MAY NEED CLOSER EVALUATION
Certain growths or situations should be professionally assessed before attempting wart treatment.
A growth that is bleeding, painful or changing rapidly
Uncertainty about whether the growth is actually a wart
Multiple or repeatedly recurring warts
Warts affecting sensitive locations such as the face or genital area
Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation or other medical conditions that may change treatment safety
Do not cut, burn or pick at a suspected wart yourself. Your dermatologist can first confirm the diagnosis and recommend an appropriate treatment.
03
What to expect
Wart assessment
Your dermatologist examines the growth's appearance, location, number and treatment history to determine whether it is consistent with a wart.
Personalised treatment
Depending on the wart, options may include medicines applied to the skin, cryotherapy or other dermatologist-performed procedures.
Follow-up & prevention
Some warts require more than one treatment session. Guidance on reducing viral spread may also form part of your care.
04
Physician note
A wart may look like a simple skin growth, but correct identification matters. Other skin lesions can sometimes resemble warts, and treatment should be chosen according to the location and type of growth.

Questions
Warts are caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) infecting the skin.
Yes. HPV can spread from a wart to another person or to other areas of your own skin.
Some warts resolve naturally, but others may persist for months or years.
Yes. Some warts recur and may require further treatment.
Treatment can include medicines such as salicylic acid, freezing with liquid nitrogen and other procedures depending on the wart and individual patient.
Comfort varies according to the location and procedure. Some treatments, such as cryotherapy, can cause temporary discomfort or blistering.
Certain small common warts may respond to approved over-the-counter treatments, but facial, genital, uncertain or persistent growths should be professionally assessed.
Avoid picking or touching warts unnecessarily, wash your hands after treatment and avoid sharing personal items such as towels, razors and nail clippers.
They are both associated with HPV, but genital warts involve different clinical considerations and should receive appropriate medical evaluation rather than being treated like a routine hand or foot wart.

MEDICAL DERMATOLOGY
Not every skin growth should be treated the same way.
Warts can vary considerably in appearance depending on their type and location, while other skin growths may sometimes be mistaken for them.
At Averah, position this service around clinical identification first, followed by a treatment approach selected for the growth, location and individual patient.
Since warts can spread and may recur, good care also includes guidance on reducing transmission and monitoring the response to treatment.
