01

What it is

A skin allergy occurs when the skin reacts to a substance or trigger, leading to symptoms such as itching, irritation, swelling or a rash. Allergic contact dermatitis is one example and may develop after exposure to ingredients or materials that trigger an immune reaction.

However, not every itchy rash is an allergy. Irritant dermatitis, eczema, fungal infections, hives and other skin conditions may look similar, making clinical assessment important when symptoms persist or recur.

02

What may be causing your skin reaction?

Skin reactions can appear in several ways and may have allergic or non-allergic causes. Understanding the pattern and trigger helps guide the right approach.

An itchy rash that develops when the skin reacts to an allergen it has come into contact with.

Raised, intensely itchy bumps or patches that can develop suddenly. Hives are not always caused by an allergy.

Materials such as nickel may trigger allergic contact dermatitis in people who have become sensitised.

Fragrances in cosmetics, personal-care products and other items can be a cause of contact dermatitis.

Repeated itching and irritation may require assessment to distinguish allergy from eczema, infection or another condition.

More than one factor—such as irritation, allergy and an existing skin condition—may contribute to recurring symptoms.

WHO MAY NEED CLOSER EVALUATION

Some allergic or rash symptoms require prompt medical assessment.

Rash spreading rapidly or involving much of the body

Significant blistering, open sores or painful skin

Persistent or repeatedly recurring reactions

Swelling around the face, eyes or lips

A rash that is not improving with current treatment

Your dermatologist will review your symptoms, possible exposures, medical history and previous reactions before recommending appropriate care.

03

What to expect

Skin & trigger assessment

Your dermatologist evaluates the appearance, location and timing of the rash along with products, materials or other exposures that may have triggered it.

Diagnosis-led treatment

Care is selected according to whether the concern appears allergic, irritant, inflammatory or related to another skin condition.

Trigger avoidance & follow-up

When a trigger is identified, avoiding it can become an important part of preventing repeated contact dermatitis. Patch testing may sometimes be recommended when allergic contact dermatitis is suspected.

04

Physician note

Not every itchy rash is an allergy, and identifying the trigger can sometimes require detective work.

Contact dermatitis can result from either irritation or an allergic reaction, while hives and other inflammatory conditions may produce similar symptoms.

Questions

Skin allergies can occur when the immune system reacts to a substance contacting the skin. Common contact allergens can include ingredients in cosmetics, fragrances, metals and other materials.

Symptoms may include itching, irritation, dryness, cracking, swelling, blisters or a visible rash, depending on the reaction.

No. Eczema, irritation, infections and other dermatological conditions can also cause itching and rashes.

Contact dermatitis is inflammation that develops when something touching the skin either irritates it or causes an allergic reaction.

Hives are raised, itchy bumps or patches that can appear suddenly. Although allergy can cause hives, many cases have other triggers or no obvious allergic cause

Yes. Ingredients in skin care, cosmetics and fragrances can cause allergic contact dermatitis in susceptible people.

When allergic contact dermatitis is suspected, a dermatologist may recommend patch testing to help identify substances that trigger a skin reaction.

No. Dermatology patch testing is used primarily for delayed contact allergy and does not test for immediate food allergies.

Persistent, recurring or severe contact dermatitis symptoms should be professionally evaluated, particularly when the trigger is unclear or treatment is not helping

MEDICAL DERMATOLOGY

Finding the trigger can change the treatment.

Itchy or inflamed skin can be caused by allergy, irritation or another dermatological condition, and these concerns can appear similar on the surface.

At Averah, the page should communicate a diagnosis-first approach: understanding where the rash appears, when it started, which products or materials may be involved and whether the reaction keeps returning.

When allergic contact dermatitis is suspected and the trigger remains unclear, patch testing may sometimes help identify the responsible contact allergen.
