What it is
A nail infection can affect fingernails or toenails and may cause changes in colour, thickness, shape or texture. Fungal nail infection is one common cause, but not every abnormal-looking nail is caused by fungus.
Nail changes may also occur because of trauma, inflammation or other skin conditions. Correct diagnosis is therefore important before beginning treatment.
02
What may be affecting your nails?
Changes in nail appearance can have different causes. Understanding the pattern helps guide the right treatment approach.
Affected nails may appear yellow, white, brown or otherwise different from their usual colour.
Infection or other nail conditions may cause the nail plate to become thicker and harder.
The nail may become fragile, crumbly or more likely to break at the edges.
Part of the nail may begin lifting or separating from the underlying nail bed.
Ridges, roughness or irregular texture may develop across the nail surface.
Toenails are commonly affected because footwear and moisture can create conditions that encourage fungal growth.
WHO MAY NEED FURTHER EVALUATION
Certain nail changes should be assessed more closely before treatment is started.
Significant pain, swelling, warmth or discharge around the nail
Rapid changes in nail colour, shape or structure
Nail changes affecting several nails at the same time
Repeated infections that return despite previous treatment
Medical conditions or medications that may affect immunity, circulation or healing
This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will examine the nail and surrounding skin and review your medical history before recommending appropriate care.
03
What to expect
Nail examination
Your dermatologist assesses nail colour, thickness, texture, surrounding skin and how long the problem has been present.
Diagnosis-led treatment
Treatment is selected according to the likely cause, number of nails involved and severity of the condition.
Follow-up & nail care
Because nails grow slowly, improvement can take time. Follow-up and appropriate nail-care guidance may be recommended.
04
Physician note
Not every yellow or thickened nail is a fungal infection. Trauma, psoriasis and other nail conditions can sometimes produce a similar appearance.
At Averah, we assess the nail carefully before recommending treatment rather than treating every nail change as fungus.
Correct diagnosis is especially important when nail changes persist, spread or repeatedly return.
