01

What it is

Stress-related hair shedding commonly occurs as telogen effluvium, a condition in which physical or emotional stress causes more hairs than usual to enter the resting and shedding phase.

The shedding often appears a few months after the triggering event, which can make the cause less obvious. In many cases, telogen effluvium is temporary once the trigger has resolved.

02

How can stress-related hair loss appear?

Telogen effluvium usually causes increased shedding across the scalp rather than one clearly defined bald patch.

More hair may appear while washing, brushing or running your hands through your hair.

Overall hair may feel thinner while washing, brushing or running your hands through it.

Density may reduce across the scalp rather than in one isolated area.

Reduced density can make the scalp more noticeable under bright lighting.

Shedding may begin weeks or months after the stressful event rather than immediately.

When the trigger resolves, shedding often decreases and normal fullness can gradually return.

WHO MAY NEED FURTHER ASSESSMENT

Some patterns should not automatically be attributed to stress.

Hair shedding that continues for many months

Clearly defined round or patchy bald areas

Significant itching, burning, redness or scaling

Progressive hairline or crown thinning

Hair loss associated with other unexplained health changes

This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will review your shedding history, scalp findings, recent health changes and possible triggers before recommending care.

03

What to expect

Hair & scalp assessment

Your shedding pattern, density, scalp condition and timeline of recent stress or health changes are reviewed.

Trigger & cause evaluation

Your dermatologist assesses whether the pattern is consistent with telogen effluvium or whether another form of hair loss may be contributing. Diagnosis is important because treatment depends on the cause.

Recovery & monitoring

When telogen effluvium is linked to a resolved trigger, shedding often settles gradually. Persistent cases may require additional evaluation and follow-up.

Physician note

Stress-related hair shedding can look dramatic, but increased shedding does not always mean permanent follicle loss.

Questions

Yes. Significant physical or emotional stress can trigger excessive shedding known as telogen effluvium.

Telogen effluvium is excessive hair shedding that occurs when more follicles than usual shift into the resting and shedding phase.

Not always. Hair shedding often becomes noticeable two to three months after a significant stressor or change to the body.

Triggers can include emotional stress, illness, surgery, childbirth, significant weight loss and other major changes to the body.

Acute telogen effluvium is usually temporary, although prolonged or repeated triggers can contribute to more persistent shedding.

When the trigger resolves, shedding often decreases and normal hair fullness can gradually return.

The timeline varies. AAD guidance notes that many people regain normal fullness within approximately 6–9 months after excessive shedding settles.

Not automatically. Treatment should depend on the diagnosis, and many cases of acute telogen effluvium improve when the underlying trigger resolves.

Consider evaluation when shedding is persistent, severe, patchy, associated with scalp symptoms or when you are unsure of the cause. Effective treatment begins by identifying what is causing the hair loss.

PERSONALISED HAIR RECOVERY CARE

Sometimes the shedding starts after the stress has passed.

One of the confusing features of telogen effluvium is its delayed onset. Hair shedding may become noticeable months after the physical or emotional trigger, when the person may already feel that the stressful period is over.

At Averah, care focuses on your timeline, shedding pattern, scalp condition and possible triggers before deciding whether monitoring or further treatment is appropriate.
