What it is

Laser skin resurfacing uses controlled laser energy to improve selected skin concerns such as fine wrinkles, uneven skin tone or texture, sun-damaged skin and mild-to-moderate acne scars.

Depending on the concern, treatment may use an ablative, non-ablative or fractional approach. Ablative resurfacing removes part of the skin surface, while non-ablative treatment works deeper without removing the outer layer. Fractional lasers treat microscopic columns while leaving surrounding skin untreated.

02

What can laser resurfacing address?

Laser resurfacing can be considered for several texture and photoageing concerns after appropriate skin assessment.

Controlled resurfacing can help improve rough or irregular skin texture.

Selected mild-to-moderate acne scars may be treated using appropriate resurfacing techniques.

Laser resurfacing may help soften the appearance of selected fine lines and wrinkles.

Resurfacing can be used to improve some visible changes associated with sun damage.

Selected areas of irregular pigmentation may be addressed depending on the laser and skin type.

Resurfacing can help improve selected combinations of texture irregularity, fine lines and photoageing.

WHO MAY NEED FURTHER ASSESSMENT

Some factors require careful evaluation before laser resurfacing.

Recent tanning, sunburn or significant sun exposure

History of keloid or abnormal scarring

Previous post-inflammatory pigmentation after procedures

History of cold sores or herpes around the treatment area

Active infection or another significant skin condition

This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will review your skin type, medical history, previous procedures and treatment goals before recommending resurfacing.

What to expect

Skin & concern assessment

Skin tone, hair colour, thickness, density and treatment area are evaluated before the first session.

Personalised laser treatment

The dermatologist selects an ablative, non-ablative or fractional approach according to the treatment goal and acceptable recovery time. Fractional resurfacing creates microscopic treatment zones while leaving surrounding areas untreated.

Healing & progress monitoring

Redness, swelling and skin response are reviewed during recovery, while improvement in texture and tone develops gradually. Recovery can be considerably longer after ablative resurfacing than after non-ablative treatment.

Physician note

Effective laser resurfacing is not about treating the skin as aggressively as possible—it is about choosing the right depth and energy for the right skin.

This is especially important for Indian skin, where treatment planning must carefully consider the possibility of post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Questions

Laser skin resurfacing uses controlled laser energy to improve selected concerns such as uneven texture, fine wrinkles, sun-damaged skin and mild-to-moderate acne scars.

Ablative lasers remove the outer skin layer and heat deeper skin, while non-ablative lasers work below the surface without removing the epidermis. Ablative treatment generally involves more recovery.

Fractional treatment delivers laser energy through microscopic treatment columns while leaving surrounding skin untreated, helping the skin recover between treated areas.

Yes. Laser resurfacing can improve selected mild-to-moderate acne scars, although the ideal technique depends on the scar type and skin characteristics.

It can be considered, but treatment requires careful selection. Brown skin has a higher risk of post-treatment hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, so experience with different skin tones is important.

Discomfort varies with the laser and treatment depth. Topical anaesthesia is commonly used with non-ablative resurfacing to reduce discomfort.

Downtime varies significantly. Non-ablative resurfacing can have relatively short recovery, while ablative procedures can involve swelling, peeling and healing over several days or longer.

The number varies according to the laser and treatment goal. Fractional and non-ablative treatments commonly require multiple sessions rather than a single procedure.

Yes. Sun protection is important before and after laser treatment because UV exposure can increase the risk of burns and pigmentation changes.

PERSONALISED SKIN RESURFACING

Better resurfacing starts with better laser selection.

Different resurfacing technologies affect the skin at different depths. A treatment appropriate for one person may involve unnecessary risk or downtime for another.

At Averah, planning focuses on your skin tone, texture concern, pigmentation tendency, treatment depth and recovery expectations before deciding which resurfacing approach may be appropriate.
