01

What it is

Vitiligo is a condition in which areas of skin lose pigment, creating patches that appear lighter or white compared with the surrounding skin. It is generally considered an autoimmune condition involving pigment-producing melanocytes.

Medical vitiligo treatment focuses on controlling disease activity where possible and encouraging repigmentation using dermatologist-prescribed therapies selected according to the location, extent and pattern of vitiligo.

02

How can vitiligo appear?

Vitiligo can develop in different patterns and may affect one area or several parts of the skin.

Pigment loss commonly becomes noticeable on exposed areas such as the hands or fingers.

Some forms of vitiligo develop similar areas of pigment loss on both sides of the body.

Vitiligo may affect areas around the eyes, mouth or other parts of the face.

Existing patches may remain stable or gradually increase in size over time.

Hair growing within an affected area can sometimes lose its natural pigment and appear white or grey.

One or more clearly defined areas may appear lighter or completely white compared with surrounding skin.

WHO MAY NEED FURTHER ASSESSMENT

Some pigment changes deserve closer dermatologist evaluation before treatment.

New white patches appearing over a short period

Existing patches increasing in size or number

Pigment loss affecting the face, hands or multiple body areas

White patches associated with other unexplained skin changes

Areas that do not clearly resemble typical vitiligo

This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will review your skin, pigment pattern, medical history and progression before recommending treatment.

03

What to expect

Skin & pigment assessment

The location, distribution and extent of white patches are examined, along with whether the condition appears stable or actively changing.

Personalised medical treatment

Depending on the individual, dermatologist-prescribed treatment may include topical corticosteroids or other topical medicines designed to influence inflammation and pigmentation.

Pigment & progression monitoring

Patches are reviewed over time to assess repigmentation, stability and whether new areas of pigment loss are developing.

04

Physician note

Medical vitiligo treatment is not simply about covering a white patch—it begins with understanding whether the condition is active, stable and suitable for treatment.

Vitiligo is generally considered an autoimmune disorder in which immune activity contributes to the loss or dysfunction of pigment-producing melanocytes.

No. Vitiligo is not contagious and cannot be spread from one person to another.

Vitiligo behaves differently between individuals. Some patches remain stable, while others may enlarge or new patches may appear.

Yes. Dermatologists may use prescription topical medicines and other therapies depending on the location, extent and activity of the condition.

Treatment can help restore pigmentation in some people, but the degree and durability of repigmentation vary.

There is currently no guaranteed cure for vitiligo. Treatment aims to restore pigment where possible and manage ongoing pigment loss.

Diagnosis usually involves a medical history and detailed skin examination. A Wood’s lamp may sometimes be used to make affected areas easier to asses

Consider dermatologist assessment if you notice new or expanding white patches, unexplained pigment loss or changes that you are unsure are vitiligo.
