What it is
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune form of hair loss in which the immune system attacks hair follicles. It commonly appears as one or more smooth, round or oval bald patches on the scalp or other hair-bearing areas.
Unlike scarring forms of alopecia, alopecia areata generally does not permanently destroy the follicle, which means regrowth can occur, although the course can be unpredictable.
02
How can alopecia areata appear?
Alopecia areata can range from one small patch to more extensive hair loss and may involve areas beyond the scalp.
One or more smooth, clearly defined areas of hair loss may appear on the scalp.
Men may develop smooth, defined bald patches within otherwise normal beard growth.
Several separate areas may develop and sometimes become larger over time.
Alopecia areata can sometimes involve part or all of the eyebrows.
In more extensive cases, hair loss can involve most or all of the scalp.
More severe forms can affect hair on multiple areas of the body.
WHO MAY NEED FURTHER ASSESSMENT
Some presentations deserve detailed dermatologist evaluation before treatment begins.
Rapidly increasing or multiple new bald patches
Loss involving eyebrows, eyelashes or beard hair
Extensive scalp or body-hair loss
Redness, scaling, pain or scarring that may suggest another diagnosis
Hair loss associated with other unexplained health changes
This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will assess your hair-loss pattern, scalp, medical history and previous treatment before recommending care.

What to expect
Hair & scalp assessment
The number, size and location of patches are examined along with the scalp, surrounding hair and other affected areas.
Diagnosis & treatment planning
Treatment depends on age, extent of hair loss and previous response. Options can include corticosteroid-based treatments and other dermatologist-directed therapies; more extensive alopecia may require a different treatment strategy.
Regrowth monitoring
Hair regrowth and the development of new patches are monitored over time so the treatment plan can be adjusted if needed.

Physician note
Alopecia areata is not the same as ordinary hair thinning or genetic baldness. It is an autoimmune hair-loss condition and needs a diagnosis-specific approach.

Yes. Alopecia areata can produce well-defined patches of hair loss within the beard
Yes, regrowth can occur because the follicles generally remain alive, but regrowth and recurrence can be unpredictable.
Treatment depends on age and severity. Dermatologists may use corticosteroids and other therapies; for adults with patchy disease, corticosteroid injections are commonly used.
Yes. Newer systemic treatments, including JAK inhibitors, are available for severe alopecia areata in some countries and patient groups. Treatment selection requires specialist medical assessment.
Yes. Hair loss and regrowth can occur in cycles, and recurrence is possible even after successful regrowth.
A dermatologist should examine the area because fungal infection, scarring alopecia and other hair-loss conditions can sometimes produce patchy loss.

PERSONALISED ALOPECIA CARE
A bald patch needs a diagnosis, not a guess.
Alopecia areata can look very different from hereditary pattern hair loss even though both cause visible hair loss. Because alopecia areata is immune-mediated and may follow an unpredictable course, the treatment approach also differs.
At Averah, care focuses on the number of patches, extent of hair loss, affected areas and individual clinical history before deciding how treatment should proceed.
