01

What it is

Scalp psoriasis is psoriasis affecting the skin of the scalp. It can cause patches or plaques with noticeable scale, itching, flaking and scalp irritation.

Symptoms may affect a small area or become more widespread, and scalp psoriasis can sometimes extend beyond the hairline.

02

How can scalp psoriasis appear?

Scalp psoriasis can vary from mild localised scaling to more noticeable plaques and widespread scalp involvement.

Raised, clearly defined areas of affected skin may develop across selected scalp regions.

Noticeable scale may build over plaques and appear thicker than ordinary dandruff.

The scalp may feel repeatedly itchy, irritated or uncomfortable.

Loosened scale may fall through the hair and resemble heavy dandruff.

Psoriasis may extend beyond the scalp edge onto the forehead, behind the ears or nearby skin.

Scratching, forceful scale removal and inflammation can sometimes contribute to temporary hair loss.

WHO MAY NEED FURTHER ASSESSMENT

Some symptoms deserve closer dermatologist evaluation.

Thick or widespread scalp plaques

Cracking, bleeding or significant scalp tenderness

Severe itching that interferes with daily comfort

Noticeable hair loss around affected areas

Joint pain, stiffness or swelling alongside psoriasis symptoms

This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will assess your scalp, skin involvement, symptoms and medical history before recommending care.

03

What to expect

Scalp & severity assessment

The location, thickness and extent of plaques, scale and inflammation are carefully evaluated.

Personalised treatment planning

Depending on severity, treatment may include medicated scalp preparations, corticosteroid-based treatments, vitamin D–based treatments, scale-softening approaches or other dermatologist-directed therapies.

Flare & progress monitoring

Scalp response and recurrence are reviewed over time so treatment can be adjusted when needed.

04

Physician note

Scalp psoriasis needs inflammation control—not aggressive removal of every visible scale.Scratching or forcefully lifting plaques can irritate the scalp further. The goal is to reduce inflammation, control scale and build a practical long-term management plan.

Questions

Scalp psoriasis is psoriasis that affects the skin of the scalp and can cause plaques, scale, itching and flaking.

No. Dandruff generally causes looser flakes, while psoriasis can produce thicker, more clearly defined plaques and scale.

Psoriasis is an immune-mediated inflammatory condition. Genetics and environmental factors can influence who develops it and when flare-ups occur.

Yes. Itching is a common scalp psoriasis symptom and can range from mild to significant.

Temporary shedding can occur, particularly with scratching, forceful scale removal or significant inflammation. The follicles are usually not permanently destroyed by scalp psoriasis itself.

Treatment can include medicated shampoos, scalp solutions, corticosteroids, vitamin D–based treatments and other psoriasis therapies depending on severity.

Aggressive picking or scratching is not recommended because it can irritate the scalp and contribute to bleeding or temporary hair loss.

Yes. Psoriasis commonly follows a pattern of flare-ups and periods of improvement, so ongoing management may be needed.

Consider dermatologist assessment when scaling is persistent, severe or widespread, or when symptoms include significant itching, bleeding, hair loss or joint problems.

PERSONALISED PSORIASIS CARE

Control the inflammation, not just the flakes.

Scalp psoriasis can sometimes resemble severe dandruff, but the underlying inflammation makes it a different condition requiring a different treatment strategy.

At Averah, care focuses on your plaque severity, scaling, scalp inflammation and flare pattern before deciding which treatment and maintenance approach may be appropriate.
