01

What it is

The scalp naturally produces sebum, an oily substance that helps protect and lubricate the skin and hair. Some people produce or accumulate enough oil for the scalp and roots to become noticeably greasy.

The goal is not to remove all natural scalp oil, but to maintain a clean, comfortable scalp while identifying any associated condition.

02

How can an oily scalp appear?

Scalp oiliness may affect both the appearance of your hair and how comfortable or clean the scalp feels

Hair roots may begin to look oily relatively soon after washing.

Oil, dead skin and styling-product residue can collect around the scalp and roots.

Greasy roots may occur together with visible dandruff or scale.

Oil can cause strands near the scalp to group together, making the roots appear less voluminous.

Associated dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis may cause itching alongside oiliness.

Some people feel their scalp requires more frequent cleansing because greasiness returns quickly.

WHO MAY NEED FURTHER ASSESSMENT

Some symptoms may suggest an associated scalp condition rather than simple oiliness.

Significant scalp redness or inflammation

Thick, greasy or recurring scale

Persistent itching or burning

Painful bumps, pustules or crusting

Sudden or unexplained change in scalp condition

This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will assess your scalp, symptoms, cleansing routine and hair products before recommending care.

What to expect

Scalp & routine assessment

Scalp oiliness, buildup, washing frequency, flakes and product use are carefully reviewed.

Personalised treatment planning

Your clinician recommends a scalp-cleansing routine and suitable products according to your hair type, oiliness and associated symptoms.

Associated-condition care

If dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis or another scalp condition is contributing, treatment is planned accordingly. Medicated dandruff shampoos can form part of treatment for mild-to-moderate scalp seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Physician note

An oily scalp does not need every trace of natural oil removed. It needs the right cleansing balance and treatment of any condition contributing to excess buildup.

Questions

Sebaceous glands connected to hair follicles naturally produce sebum. The amount of oil and how quickly it becomes noticeable can vary between individuals.

Yes. Sebum naturally coats and helps protect the skin and hair. The concern is usually when oiliness becomes excessive, uncomfortable or associated with other scalp symptoms.

Yes. Dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis can occur on an oily scalp, and seborrhoeic dermatitis commonly affects areas rich in oil glands.

There is no single schedule for everyone. Washing frequency should consider scalp oiliness, hair type and associated conditions rather than following one fixed rule.

Yes. Hair products, oil, sweat and dead skin cells can contribute to buildup around the scalp and follicles.

No. Dry shampoo absorbs oil but does not clean the scalp in the same way as shampoo and water. The AAD recommends regular washing rather than relying only on dry shampoo.

Oiliness with flaking may occur with dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis, especially when there is recurring scale or itching.

Not automatically. Overly aggressive cleansing may not suit every hair or scalp type. Product choice should balance effective scalp cleansing with hair and scalp tolerance.

Consider assessment when oiliness is persistent or associated with significant itching, redness, thick scale, painful bumps or other new scalp changes.

Healthy scalp care is about balance, not stripping away every oil.
