01

What it is

Vitiligo is a condition in which areas of the skin lose their natural pigment, creating lighter or white patches. It can begin during childhood, which makes accurate diagnosis and age-appropriate treatment especially important.

Treatment for children is personalised according to factors such as age, affected areas, how quickly the vitiligo is changing and the child’s overall health.

02

How can vitiligo appear in children?

Vitiligo can develop in different patterns and may remain localised or change over time.

One or more clearly defined lighter or white areas may appear on otherwise normally pigmented skin.

Patches may become noticeable around the eyes, mouth or other facial areas.

Vitiligo may appear on exposed areas such as the hands and fingers.

Existing areas may remain stable, enlarge or be joined by new patches over time.

Some children develop similar areas of pigment loss on both sides of the body.

Hair within an affected area can sometimes become lighter, white or grey.

WHO MAY NEED FURTHER ASSESSMENT

Some changes deserve closer dermatologist evaluation.

New white patches are appearing quickly

Existing patches are increasing in size

The diagnosis of vitiligo is uncertain

There are other unexplained skin or health changes

The skin changes are affecting your child emotionally or socially

This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will review your child’s skin, health history, pattern of pigment loss and recent changes before recommending care.

03

What to expect

Child-friendly skin assessment

The location, distribution and recent progression of pigment loss are assessed in a comfortable, age-appropriate consultation.

Personalised treatment planning

Depending on age and clinical findings, treatment may include dermatologist-prescribed topical medicines or other therapies. Some treatments used for adults can also be used in children, but selection depends on the individual child.

Pigment & progress monitoring

Existing patches and any new areas are reviewed over time so treatment can be adjusted according to response and disease activity.

Physician note

Treating childhood vitiligo means caring for more than the visible white patches. Age, disease activity, skin sensitivity and how the child feels about their skin all matter. The goal is to create a medically appropriate plan without making the child feel that their natural appearance is something they must hide or correct.

Questions

Yes. Vitiligo can begin at an early age, and dermatologists use age and other individual factors when deciding how to treat children.

No. Different skin conditions can cause lighter patches, so an accurate dermatologist diagnosis is important before starting treatment.

No. Vitiligo is not contagious and cannot spread from one child to another through touching, playing or sharing everyday items.

It can behave differently from child to child. Some areas remain stable, while other children may develop expanding patches or new areas over time.

Treatment is individualised. Dermatologists consider the child’s age, how the vitiligo is spreading, other medical conditions and additional factors before recommending treatment.

Yes. Certain topical treatments can be used in children when clinically appropriate, including corticosteroid-based treatments and calcineurin inhibitors such as tacrolimus or pimecrolimus. Treatment choice and duration should be supervised by a clinician.

Light-based treatment can be considered for selected children with vitiligo, depending on factors such as age, extent and treatment needs. It should be planned and monitored by the treating dermatologist.

Yes. Vitiligo-affected skin contains less protective pigment and is more vulnerable to sunburn, making appropriate sun protection an important part of self-care.

Let your dermatologist know. Visible skin differences can affect some children emotionally, and options can include supportive conversations, camouflage if the child wants it, or additional psychological support when appropriate.
