LASER TREATMENTS
Laser Birthmark Treatment in Pune
Birthmarks vary in colour, depth and type, which means they cannot all be treated in the same way. At Averah, laser birthmark treatment begins with identifying the birthmark and assessing whether laser therapy is appropriate for your skin.

What it is
Birthmarks are areas of skin that differ in colour or appearance from the surrounding skin and may be present at birth or develop shortly afterwards. They include vascular birthmarks, involving blood vessels, and pigmented birthmarks, involving pigment-producing cells.
Laser treatment can help lighten selected birthmarks by targeting either blood-vessel pigment or melanin, depending on the type of mark and the laser used.
02
Which birthmarks may be considered?
Laser treatment may be useful for selected vascular and pigmented birthmarks after dermatologist assessment.
Pulsed dye laser is used to improve port-wine stain colour, also called capillary malformations.
Superficial vascular marks may respond to lasers designed to target blood vessels.
Some flat brown pigmented birthmarks can be considered for pigment-targeting laser treatment.
Selected café-au-lait pigmentation may be evaluated for laser treatment, although results and recurrence can vary.
Certain dermal pigmented birthmarks such as naevus of Ota may be treated with pigment-targeting laser systems.
Some birthmarks require observation, medication or surgery instead of laser, depending on their type and clinical significance.
WHO MAY NEED FURTHER ASSESSMENT
Some birthmarks should be evaluated carefully before any cosmetic laser treatment.
The diagnosis of the birthmark is uncertain
The mark is rapidly changing in colour, size or shape
The area is raised, painful, bleeding or ulcerated
The birthmark is large or involves a sensitive anatomical area
There is concern that it may be associated with another medical condition
This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will examine the birthmark and determine whether laser treatment, another treatment or simple monitoring is most appropriate.

What to expect
Birthmark & skin assessment
The type, colour, depth, location and surrounding skin are carefully examined before treatment selection.
Personalised laser treatment
The laser is selected according to what needs to be targeted. Vascular lasers target blood-vessel colour, while pigment lasers target melanin within selected pigmented lesions.
Fading & progress monitoring
Birthmarks generally lighten gradually rather than disappearing immediately, and multiple sessions may be required. Results vary according to the type and depth of the mark.

Physician note
A birthmark should be identified before it is treated. The colour may look simple, but the structures creating that colour can be very different.
Successful treatment depends on matching the correct laser technology to the birthmark type while protecting the surrounding skin.

Questions
A birthmark is an area of skin that differs from surrounding skin and is usually present at birth or appears shortly afterwards. Birthmarks can be vascular, pigmented or other types.
No. Most birthmarks are harmless, and many do not require treatment. Some may fade naturally with time.
Lasers may be considered for selected vascular birthmarks such as port-wine stains and certain pigmented birthmarks. Suitability depends on the exact diagnosis.
Yes. Pulsed dye laser is a commonly used treatment for port-wine stains and can help improve their colour.
Some flat brown birthmarks can respond to pigment-targeting lasers such as selected Q-switched systems, although results vary.
Complete removal cannot be guaranteed. Some birthmarks lighten significantly, while others respond partially or may recur after treatment.
There is no fixed number. Multiple treatments are commonly required, and the number depends on the birthmark type, colour, depth and individual response.
Laser treatment can be considered, but skin tone influences treatment selection and the risk of pigment changes. Some pigmented birthmarks may respond differently in darker skin, so conservative dermatologist-led planning is important.
A dermatologist should assess a birthmark when its diagnosis is uncertain, it changes unexpectedly, becomes symptomatic or there is concern about its medical significance.

PERSONALISED BIRTHMARK LASER CARE
The colour is only part of the diagnosis.
Two birthmarks may look similar but contain very different targets beneath the skin. A red vascular birthmark involves blood vessels, while a brown pigmented birthmark involves melanin or melanocytes.
At Averah, treatment planning focuses on your birthmark type, colour, depth, skin tone and expected response before deciding whether laser therapy is appropriate.
