01

What is FUE Hair Transplant?

Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) is a hair transplant donor-harvesting technique in which individual naturally occurring follicular units are carefully removed from the donor area using small punches. These grafts are then prepared and transplanted into selected areas of hair loss.

The goal is not simply to extract as many grafts as possible. Careful donor management is important to preserve a natural-looking donor area for the future.

02

Where can FUE help?

Hair transplantation can be considered for appropriately diagnosed and selected men and women with suitable donor hair.

For selected frontal recession where donor follicles are available for natural hairline reconstruction.

For selected temple recession requiring careful direction and low-density transition planning.

For suitable crown hair loss where donor supply and long-term progression allow transplantation.

FUE may be considered for selected stable or appropriately managed androgenetic hair loss.

Selected women with suitable patterns of permanent hair loss and adequate donor density may be candidates for transplantation.

Hair follicles may sometimes be transplanted into selected scars after careful evaluation of the scar tissue and blood supply.

WHO IT’S NOT FOR

WHO MAY NEED FURTHER ASSESSMENT

Very limited or weak donor hair

Rapidly progressing or undiagnosed hair loss

Active scalp disease or inflammation

Significant previous donor-area overharvesting

Expectations that exceed the available donor supply

A transplant consultation should evaluate both the area you want restored and the donor hair available to achieve it.

What to expect

Donor & Hairline Assessment

Your hair-loss pattern, donor density, follicle characteristics and future progression are assessed before graft numbers and hairline design are planned.

Individual Graft Harvesting

During FUE, follicular units are isolated and removed individually from the donor area using small punch instruments.

Graft Placement & Growth

Prepared follicles are placed into the recipient area according to the planned angle, direction and distribution. AAD notes that transplanted hairs commonly shed initially, with new growth developing over subsequent months

04

Physician note

A successful FUE transplant starts with protecting the donor area—not simply extracting the maximum number of grafts.

Overharvesting can make the donor area appear visibly sparse and can reduce the supply available for future restoration. Long-term donor planning is therefore a key part of responsible FUE surgery.

Why Averah

Advanced Donor Assessment

Donor density, follicle quality and available graft supply are evaluated before surgical planning.

Personalised Hairline Design

Hairline shape is planned around facial proportions, existing hair and long-term hair-loss pattern.

Precision Graft Planning

Graft numbers and distribution are planned according to both recipient needs and donor availability.

Long-Term Donor Preservation

Future hair loss and donor availability are considered rather than focusing only on the immediate procedure.

Questions

FUE stands for Follicular Unit Excision. Individual follicular units are removed from the donor area and transplanted into areas of hair loss.

No. FUE removes individual follicular units using small punches, while FUT removes a strip of donor scalp from which follicular units are dissected

Yes. FUE does not create one linear scar, but it leaves multiple small circular scars where follicular units are removed. It should not be advertised as “scarless.”

Hair transplantation moves follicles from an appropriate donor area into areas of hair loss. AAD describes hair transplantation as capable of producing lasting, natural-looking hair restoration in appropriately selected patients, although ongoing native hair loss can still continue.

Not always. Shaven, partially shaven and selected unshaven FUE approaches exist, although unshaven procedures are technically more demanding and are not suitable for every patient.

There is no fixed number. It depends on the size of the recipient area, desired density, existing hair and how many grafts can safely be obtained from your donor area.

Not universally. ISHRS states there is no single FUE method that is automatically best for every patient. Hair characteristics, donor supply and surgical goals influence technique selection.

Transplanted hairs commonly shed after surgery. AAD notes that many patients begin seeing new hair growth within months, with fuller results developing progressively.

Poor planning or excessive harvesting can leave the donor area looking sparse. Responsible FUE therefore requires careful distribution and preservation of available donor follicles.

PERSONALISED FUE PLANNING

Good FUE is about what you preserve, not only what you transplant.

Your donor area contains a limited supply of transplantable follicles. Extracting too aggressively can compromise donor appearance and reduce the options available if hair loss progresses later.

At Averah, FUE planning should focus on donor density, graft requirements, natural hairline design and long-term restoration strategy before determining the transplant plan.
