01

What it is

Vitiligo phototherapy is a dermatologist-supervised treatment that exposes affected skin to a carefully controlled form of ultraviolet light. Narrowband UVB (NB-UVB) is one form of phototherapy used in vitiligo care.

Phototherapy works gradually and usually requires repeated sessions, with the treatment dose individually planned and adjusted by the clinical team.

02

When can phototherapy be considered?

Phototherapy may form part of a personalised treatment plan depending on the extent, location and response of vitiligo.

A light-box approach may be considered when pigment loss involves larger areas of the body.

These areas can respond differently from other sites and may be considered for light-based treatment.

Targeted light treatment may be used when only smaller, specific areas require therapy.

Phototherapy may be considered when topical treatment alone has not provided sufficient improvement.

Light therapy may sometimes be combined with dermatologist-prescribed topical medication.

The goal of treatment is to encourage pigment return where clinically achievable.

WHO MAY NEED FURTHER ASSESSMENT

Phototherapy is not automatically suitable for every person with vitiligo.

Unconfirmed or uncertain diagnosis

History of unusual sensitivity to ultraviolet light

Current medicines that may affect light sensitivity

Significant recent sunburn or skin irritation

Vitiligo areas requiring a different treatment approach

This list isn’t exhaustive. Your dermatologist will determine whether phototherapy is appropriate after assessing your skin and individual treatment needs.

What to expect

Vitiligo & skin assessment

The location, extent and activity of pigment loss are reviewed before starting light treatment.

Controlled light sessions

Affected skin is exposed to a carefully planned dose of therapeutic ultraviolet light. The dose and exposure time are adjusted according to individual response.

Repigmentation monitoring

Skin response, tolerance and changes in pigmentation are reviewed over repeated sessions so the treatment plan can be adjusted when needed.

04

Physician note

Vitiligo phototherapy is a gradual treatment. The goal is controlled, consistent light exposure—not stronger or longer exposure.

The treatment aims to support repigmentation of affected areas. Response varies according to the individual and the part of the body being treated.

There is no single number for everyone. Phototherapy works gradually and generally requires repeated sessions, with the treatment course determined by response and tolerance.

The light treatment itself is generally not painful, although the skin may feel warm and mild irritation or itching can occur after treatment

Yes. Targeted light or laser treatment may be considered when only a smaller area requires therapy.

Yes. Dermatologists may sometimes combine light therapy with topical medication depending on the individual treatment plan.

No treatment can guarantee a permanent cure. Phototherapy may help restore pigment, but response varies and new or recurrent pigment loss can still occur.

No. Medical phototherapy uses controlled equipment and individually planned dosing. Unsupervised commercial sunlamps are not a substitute for dermatologist-supervised treatment.
